I'm doing a presentation to YA Writers next month about the differences between writing for MG and YA, but I've also been researching the difference between YA and mainstream Adult. There's not much. About the only real difference is the age of the protag, who solves the problems, and who the story is focused on.Rebecca Ryals Russellhttp://www.rryalsrussell.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7785012510865323096.post-68837569973562990732011-02-24T08:31:24.593-05:002011-02-24T08:31:24.593-05:00Thanks for the great discussion, everyone! I find it so interesting that the cross over between adult and YA markets seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. A good thing, I think, for the publishing industry in this economy. I hope!Karen S. A lot of adults seeing the blurb for this book want to read it. I think one of the reasons adults like YA so much is the books bring them back to their own awkward adolescence. The problems of teens just aren't as earthshaking as adult problems. But they are just as important.

I also balance my reading between YA and adult, but I really love YA too!! The fantasy, sci fi and now graphic novels (comics) are what I read most.

Some of my favorites: Pullmans' "His Dark Materials" series (which I personally think is more adult than YA but as you say the ages of the protagonists are YA), and Joe Kelly's "I Kill Giants" (graphic novel - FANTASTIC!)

Will come back again soon.

All the best,
Meryl Jaffe
www.departingthetext.blogspot.comMERYL JAFFE, PhD - parent, psychologist, teacher, author...https://www.blogger.com/profile/10310099341897509058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7785012510865323096.post-30612734405567690182011-02-23T14:17:07.325-05:002011-02-23T14:17:07.325-05:00It's funny because I've read a few YA book...It's funny because I've read a few YA books that felt like adult books to me. For me it's a feeling that I can't describe. I love YA; I think it's more emotional because kids that age are emotional. I agree that it is hard sometimes to know where the lines should be drawn, especially when the story can be enjoyed by a diversity of ages and we don't want anyone to miss out on a great book.
